Following a successful series of land mobile tests in several countries, the Globalsat consortium of companies providing MSS (Mobile Satellite Service) throughout the Americas is announcing the immediate availability of Iridium Certus voice and data services and Thales and Cobham Certus terminals.
The innovative global service is based on the renovated Iridium satellite constellation, with 75 new satellites already in orbit as of this month.
Terminals are available from Cobham and Thales for both land mobile and maritime mobile use, currently enabling multi line enhanced quality (4.8Kbps) voice service as well as data service of up to 384Kbps, with the possibility of upgrading to download speeds of 704Kbps. Future user terminals will enable smaller form factors for portable and M2M / IoT as well as larger 1.4Mbps terminals for enhanced wideband connectivity.
J. Alberto Palacios, CEO of Globalsat said: “We have been committed to the Certus project from the very beginning and are pleased to see this initiative going live. Our affiliate companies expect a significant amount of new business as well as upgrades from users of lower bandwidth and competing legacy solutions, especially at sea where the durability of terminals with no moving parts results in an important increase in reliability”.
“We were one of the first companies to become as launch partners and to beta test Certus and our hands-on examination has convinced us that this really is a game changer. Even before the bandwidth available to user terminals goes past a megabit per second, the current generation is delivering a very user friendly experience thanks to lower latency and intelligent protocol management. Also, phone calls are still important and the improvement in quality is noticeable in comparison to the 2.4Kbps AMBE which the satellite industry is used to dealing with”.
The Globalsat consortium of companies, with offices in 10 countries and distributors throughout the western hemisphere, already has local stock of Certus terminals in several points of presence and is ready to demo and sell equipment and services immediately.
